The water footprint of a community or business is defined as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce the goods and services consumed by the community or produced by the business.

Businesses are becoming more aware of the need to reduce, reuse and recycle as a mantra for being serious about sustainability and the green economy. This is especially true of energy and water resources where limitations on potable water use and conservation measures are becoming more important to consumers, businesses and industry here in Massachusetts. The need to become more water wise is apparent in several Massachusetts watersheds that have been overstressed due to depletion of groundwater and surface water supplies or have restrictions placed on seasonal water demands. This EBC program will provide information on the development of a water footprint for a business leading to a process to reduce the amount of water consumed. Case studies will provide examples of facilities that have developed a vision for sustainable water resource management and then expanded that vision to include the promotion of green business practices.

Fellow web entrepreneurs and VCs gather once a week in Boston to grab some coffee, free WiFi, and chat about what's new.

Around the world, tech entrepreneurs and investors are meeting regularly to drink coffee, network and hopefully do deals. No more of the old-school "please send us your executive summary before we'll even talk to you". A place to find opportunities.

Where and when is it?
Held every Wed morning from 8:30a-10:30am at Andala Coffee in Cambridge.

Why?
Well, one of the things I've heard repeatedly is:
1. investors are inaccessible
2. entrepreneurs need regular physical space to meet, not just each other but also also network with investors and corporates

We all get an enormous amount from informal contact with both entrepreneurs and investors.

On OpenCoffee: "What really stood out for me this week was the feeling of people clustering into short meetings and really getting work done. OpenCoffee is deliberately during the day to encourage real professional networking rather than social networking - so the vibe of people getting things done and making connections is really excellent."

Finding secure, safe and reliable sources of energy to power world economic growth will be one of the great challenges of this century. The Harvard University Center for the Environment invites the Harvard community to take up the challenge by participating in this ongoing series of discussions.THE FUTURE OF ENERGY
Spring 2010

Aubrey McClendon, Chairman and CEO, Chesapeake Energy
“Natural Gas: Fueling America's Clean Energy Future"
Harvard University
Science Center, Lecture Hall D
One Oxford Street, Cambridge
New drilling and completion technologies have allowed the U.S. natural gas and oil industry to develop resources in shale reservoirs that were previously considered uneconomic. Shale gas has quickly transformed the industry and provided consumers with reliable sources of supply and the ability to reshape the nation's energy policy. McClendon will discuss natural gas as the most practical answer to our nation's growing need for clean energy and reduced dependence on foreign oil.Aubrey K. McClendon has served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer since co-founding Chesapeake Energy in 1989. Chesapeake Energy is now one of the largest producers of natural gas in the nation and the most active driller of new wells in the U.S.  Headquartered in Oklahoma City, their strategy is focused on discovering, acquiring and developing conventional and unconventional natural gas reserves onshore in the U.S., primarily in the "Big 4" natural gas shale plays: the Barnett Shale of north-central Texas, the Haynesville Shale of East Texas and northwestern Louisiana, the Fayetteville Shale of central Arkansas and the Marcellus Shale of the northern Appalachian Basin.
The Future of Energy lecture series is sponsored by the Harvard University Center for the Environment with generous support from Bank of America. All of the lectures are free and open to the public. View detailed lecture information at www.environment.harvard.edu.
